Welcome to UNISMUN, Esteemed Directors, Student Officers, Delegates, and Administration Staff. My name is Yein Oh, and I am honored to be the head chair of the United Nations Environment Assembly. I am a Junior at UNIS Hanoi, and this is my fourth time chairing. I value aspects that influence humans such as science and law. The environment is where we humans thrive, so I believe that it is crucial to learn and debate to make our own environment a better place. 

The topics of UNEA for UNIS MUN March conference are the following: 

1. The question of incentives and penalties for the transition to the green industry.

2. The question of mandating green practice.

3. The internationalization of biodiversity hotspots. 

The UNEA addresses one of the significant issues that are threatening the world, which is climate change. It is the world’s highest-level decision-making body on the environment with universal membership of all the 193 member states of the United Nations. Our committee sets priorities for global environmental policies and develops international environmental law. The three topics address the issue of funding, time, financial return and burden of companies and/or countries. Regarding the goals of our committee, the topics for the March Conference will encourage nations to come with a balance in the asymmetries of power. 

Debating in UNEA will increase the delegate’s understanding on environmental issues, and delegates would be able to inquire and apply this knowledge even outside of MUN. As a chair, I look forward to fruitful debates and discussions from delegates and to seeing delegates improve their skills such as public speaking. See you in March!

My name is Rahul Gowda Thanh Tung and I am honored to be your Deputy Chair for the United Nations Environment Assembly for the upcoming March Conference. I come from a Vietnamese and Indian background, a family of 5, and 6 years at UNIS Hanoi. From my past MUN experiences, I have always been intrigued by the complexity of portraying different perspectives, and especially when putting these values and beliefs into effect during the conference. 

This conference’s theme will be on “What can we do to bring balance to the growing asymmetries of power? In regards to the environment, it is important for each and every one nation to have an equal amount of input in creating resolutions, laws, or protocols that are held to a high standard across the world. Balance leads to unity, and only with unity will anything happen – which will be needed when discussing matters relating to the world we all live in. 

The United Nations Environment Assembly is dedicated to governance of international laws in protection, responsible use, and conservation of the environment. Although initiated in another similar conference in 1972, it was only until 2012 when the United Nations Environment Assembly was officially established within the United Nations.

The upcoming March Conference issues will be on “The question of incentives and penalties for the transition to a green industry”; “The question of mandating green practices”; and “The internationalization of biodiversity hotspots”. 

I hope to help facilitate you, delegates, as you engage in diplomatic talks representing your nations. As having been a delegate myself, I know that at times, researching topics may be difficult depending on your limited resources or nations’ resources – so reach out to us chairs. My name is Thach Dang, and I am honored to serve as the Procedural Chair for the United Nations Environmental Assembly. I am a Junior at the UNIS Hanoi, and this will be my third MUN conference. Through MUN, I've learned more about the importance of discussions and weighing in multiple aspects and perspectives to solve world problems.

The UNEA is responsible for addressing some of the most pressing environmental issues facing our planet. We will be discussing topics such as "The question of incentives and penalties for the transition to the green industry," "The question of mandating green practices," and "The internationalization of biodiversity hotspots." These topics are also significant globally as they directly impact the lives of people and the earth. Each of these topics is vital for me, as I believe protecting the environment is crucial for the wellbeing of our planet and future generations.

As part of this conference's theme: "What can we do to bring balance to the growing asymmetries of power?" it is particularly relevant to the United Nations Environmental Assembly as it emphasizes the importance of ensuring that all nations' voices are heard. It is essential that power is distributed fairly in the decision-making process of solving these environmental issues and bringing forth new green legislation. We must work in solidarity to better protect our environment. 

Throughout the conference, I encourage all delegates to actively participate and engage in meaningful discussions with others to address these critical topics. I look forward to an enlightening conference filled with many fruitful debates. See you all in March!
