Head Chair

Dao Ba Khoi

Grade 11

Honourable directors, fellow chairs, distinguished delegates and most esteemed guests,

My name is Dao Ba Khoi, and I am currently attending Singapore International School @ Gamuda Gardens as a junior. This will be my third UNISMUN conference and the first as a chair, and I am extremely honoured to be able to serve as the head chair for SDG 5 in the upcoming UNISMUN November 2024 Conference.

The theme for this conference is “How can we use regional cooperation to promote equitable development?”. When nations collaborate, they can exchange effective approaches to address issues such as disparities in educational opportunities and economic growth. This is in line with the Sustainable Development Goal 5, with an aim of achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. Through regional cooperation, progress made should be more equitable and inclusive for all.

As part of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set forth by the UN, SDG 5 focuses on providing equal rights and opportunities for women and girls and to live free from discrimination and violence, as this is not only a fundamental human right but also a prerequisite for a world that is peaceful and sustainable.

The first topic that will be discussed in SDG 5 is the ”Question of equal pay“. Equal pay is essential for economic justice, as it directly impacts women’s financial independence and economic opportunities, helping to eliminate gender-based discrimination in the workplace. The second topic of “Question of female genital mutliation (targeting 5.3.2)” is crucial for protecting women’s health and bodily autonomy, as FGM is a harmful practice with severe physical and psychological consequences. Effectively tackling each of these concerns is essential for establishing a world in which women can live without prejudice and violence, actively engage in society, and experience equitable possibilities.

I look forward to working with everyone and for SDG 5 to have a fruitful debate at this November conference.

Deputy Chair

Joonhoo Bae

Grade 9

Honorable chairs, distinguished delegates, and esteemed guests.

My name is Joonhoo bae, and I am the Deputy Chair of the SDG 5 council.

I have been part of UNISMUN since 2022 November Conference, and I have participated once as a Deputry Chair, once as a Procedural, and twice as a delegate. It is the utmost honour for me to participate in 2024 November Conference. SDG 5 Committee will be questioning the equal payment between male and female, and whether it should be balanced or not. I am open to providing any necessary helps to the delegates.

The SDG 5 Council is all about achieving gender equality and empower all women and girls. All this is for establishment of prosperous and sustainable world for all individuals regardless of gender. This has not been accomplished yet due to social norms that roots underneath our community. They believe females do not deserve the right to vote, participate in controversies, and so on. However, this is such an enigmatic approach as all humans are born with equal rights that cannot be taken away. Thus, we seek for fosterage in delegate’s contribution to fair society for all, and foundation of understanding of equity.

Employment is one of the hottest issue on planet right now as there are major shifts going on for adaptation to new society, such as acceptance of female workers regardless of the job. Nevertheless, in some appointments like laboring, male workers are often graded higher than woman just because of the stereotype they are able to process more jobs. Thus, my topic wil generally focus on equal distribution of money for each gender, facing the inequality of female’s treatment in society and empowerment of them.

I will promise you guys my very best as a chair of the SDG 5 council, and I know we will have a great time at the November conference. Looking forward to see you guys!

Procedural Chair

Bhirada (Lina) Yongpiyanon

Grade 11

Greetings distinguished chairs, honorable guests and fellow delegates,

I am Bhirada (Lina) Yongpiyanon, currently a junior at UNIS Hanoi. It is my utmost pleasure to serve as a procedural chair for the SDG 5 committee in this upcoming UNISMUN November conference. This conference will mark my third conference in Model United Nations and first experience as a chair. This being said, I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to witness the work of Model United Nations from a different perspective as a Procedural Chair.

The theme for this November 2024 conference states, "How can we use regional cooperation to promote equitable development?". Even though the world is increasingly interconnected, inequalities and social injustices remain significant issues. Regional cooperation is the key to addressing this vital issue, fostering collaboration among neighboring countries to promote equitable development. By sharing knowledge, fostering aligned policies, regions can together uplift marginalized communities and contribute to the strong and fair foundation of an equitable society. With a great theme and great delegates I cannot wait to hear all the solutions they come up with.

The aim of SDG 5 (Sustainable Development Goal 5) is to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Achieving gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.

In SDG 5, the topics we will be discussing are the question of equal pay and the question of female genital mutilation. The question of equal pay regarding discrimination against women, equal rights in economic resources and women empowerment. The question of female genital mutilation regarding a multifaceted approach that includes legal frameworks, community engagement, education, and healthcare support.

I am very grateful to be chairing for the SGD 5 committee, and I look forward to seeing you all at the conference!
