How can international treaties be strengthened to regulate ownership and equitable access to space resources?
Head Chair
Hyorin Chun
Grade 8
Honorable directors, fellow delegates, and most esteemed guests,
I am Hyorin Chun, an 8th-grade student here at the United Nations International School of Hanoi. I will be the head chair of the GA1 committee. This is my fourth conference participating as a chair. I am honored to be directing General Assembly #1 as a head chair in the upcoming April UNIS MUN conference. As a chair, I have had quite a bit of experience in Model United Nations. Through this experience, I hope to improve my skills as a chair by fluently leading the debate with all delegates participating and engaging in the debate and delegates to gain more knowledge about the topic of “How can international treaties be strengthened to regulate ownership and equitable access to space resources?”.
The theme of this UNISMUN April conference is “How can international treaties be strengthened to regulate ownership and equitable access to space resources?”. This is an important and emerging topic that needs to be discussed. Space utilization usage is an emerging global issue and challenge for clear regulation to manage resource extraction, ensure fair access to every nation, and promote international cooperation. Currently, some gaps need to be filled in the Outer Space Treaty of 1967. This topic can also lead to how we can collaborate with other countries and distribute space resources equally and what regulations can be put in place to prevent environmental damage.
As a former delegate and experienced chair, I can understand the struggles and hardships of being on the spot and delivering speeches and POIs, but this hopefully be a good experience for all delegates and chairs in GA1. As a chair, I hope to have a fruitful and engaging debate and encourage delegates to be fully engaged in the debate. I hope this UNISMUN April conference will give you good memories and experiences and have fun!
Deputy Chair
Alison Choi
Grade 8
Honorable Chairs, fellow delegates and most esteemed guests,
I am Alison Choi, a 8th grade student at the United Nations International School of Hanoi. This is my first time performing as a chair, and I’m honored to be a Deputy Chair for General Assembly #1. Although I am less experienced than others and it is my first time, my responsibility and dedication to MUN will help me catch up. The main reason why I decided to take a part of MUN (both as a chair and delegate) is to enhance my leadership and speaking skills, and being able to discuss and talk about complicated political related topics.
Our committee, General Assembly #1 and its main theme and topic “How can international treaties be strengthened to regulate ownership and equitable access to space resources?” is important because it is about how crucial space resources and utilization usage are relevant to world infrastructure, a nation’s economic development, international treaties and connection of one nation to another. This topic also lets us know more about intergovernmental or non-governmental space organizations and agencies, and how the lack of important space resources causes world issues. Discussing this topic in specific does not only talk about a nation's resources but also connects to infrastructure and world development, which could help with society and economics in the future. It will deepen everyone’s understanding of real world issues right now and how space organizations and treaties are responsible regarding it.
As a former delegate for four times, I understand that delegates may find it hard to raise POI themselves and give several speeches to make the debate run smoothly and continuously to make a fun and intense debate. However, as my responsibility as a deputy chair, I will help my head chair and also pass notes to delegates answering their questions or offering questions first to make sure they understand the procedures and the current situation, so they understand the theme better and might have more motivation and courage to raise at least three POI during the whole conference and one speech, hoping it would help the debate turn into a more fun, fruitful and engaging one with various opinions and thoughts from each delegate.
Procedural Chair
Kiara Baloghdi
Grade 6
Honorable directors, fellow delegates, and most esteemed guests,
My name is Kiara Baloghdi, a 6th grade student at the United Nations International School of Hanoi. This is my 2nd conference and my first time time participating as chair. I am honored to be the Procedural Chair for General Assembly #1. Even though I have just joined MUN this year and I am less experienced than others at being chair, my passion and dedication to MUN will help me gain experience and improve my skills. The reasons why I decided to join MUN are because I wanted to improve my public speaking skills and also to discuss global issues around the world.
The main topic for General Assembly #1 is “How can international treaties be strengthened to regulate ownership and equitable access to space resources?”. This is an important topic to discuss because many countries would like to find ways to reach out and explore energy and material resources beyond Earth. We should guarantee that each nation has equivalent rights to scientific research to understand and estimate properly what kind of materials and resources are available for humankind in space. Ideally a general framework of cooperation can be constructed so that discussion and cooperation are strengthened among the nations.
From my previous experience as a delegate in the 2024 November conference, I understand the struggle of first time delegates of giving and answering POIs, delivering speeches and understanding the rules, procedures and motions so as my responsibility as a procedural chair, I will ensure that everyone learns the rules and if some delegates are struggling with that, I will make sure to help them gain better understanding and build up passion for MUN and hopefully make it a good experience for everyone attending the conference.
