Head Chair
Joan Kim
Grade 8
Honorable directors, fellow delegates, and most esteemed guests,
I am Joan Kim, an 8th grade student at the United Nations International School. This is my second conference as a chair, and I am honored to be the head chair of International Organization for Migration (IOM) for the April 2025 conference. As this is my second time as chair, I hope that I can continue to grow as a chair but also be able to help my co-chairs throughout their experience. Also, as there are a lot of on-going both new and old international affairs and conflicts left unresolved, I hope that I can gain a deeper understanding from this conference. Although I am less experienced than my fellow head chairs, I hope that my willingness to learn and improve will make up for the lack of experience and inspire my co-chairs to do the best they can.
Our theme is “How can we strengthen peaceful cooperation in the context of global innovation?” an important topic for a debate as technological and economical advances have affected how innovation and how cooperation may, possibly strengthen it. In addition, as of now it is a time where there have been technological breakthroughs with AI’s limits, making this topic more relevant than ever before.
The International Organization for Migration has a significant role in the theme as climate migration can lead to disputes, especially when migrants are trying to be economically integrated as migrants can commonly lack social support, financial requirements, and inequitable chances at employment, especially if they are the minority. All this could lead to unnecessary global conflicts or arguments and would weaken the idea of peaceful cooperation as migrants may also be able to contribute to the idea of global innovation.
As a former delegate, I can empathize with the struggles and fear of being put on stage in the moment, but as chair, I hope to be able to encourage all the delegates to speak up whenever they deem necessary and create an engaging environment, suitable for debate. I (alongside my co-chairs) hope to lead the April 2025 conference to a success filled with memorable events.
Deputy Chair
Ashley Lim
Grade 8
Honorable directors, fellow delegates and most esteemed guests,
I am Ashley Lim. I am in 8th grade and attend the United Nations International School. This is my first conference as a chair, but I have been a delegate for 2 conferences previously. I am honored to be the deputy chair of International Organization for Migration (IOM) for the April conference 2025. While this is my first time in a chair role, I’ve had the privilege of participating in two MUN conferences as a delegate. I hope to inspire delegates to be the best versions of themselves during the conference, and encourage fruitful debates.
Our theme for this conference is “How can we strengthen peaceful cooperation in the context of global innovation?”, a major question that needs to be addressed presently, due to the rapid increase of worldwide advancements in different aspects, creating new debatable questions on how innovation should be used, focusing on how cooperation could potentially heighten it.
The International Organization for Migration play’s a significant role in this conference’s theme. One of the primary concerns for migrants is their financial stability, or economical stance as they settle in a new environment. Oftentimes, migrants are looked down upon due to stereotypes, creating an environment full of inequalities not only regarding employment but social status as well. This makes it harder for migrants to integrate well within the community, raising arguments and creating conflict, which could lead to unwanted conflicts between member nations. This therefore diminishes the concept of having peaceful cooperation in the context of global innovation, as migrants are also more than able to participate in global innovation.
Again, I am honored to be the Deputy Chair for this year's April conference, and I am excited to watch each delegate present and engage in fruitful debates throughout the conference. I hope to work alongside the head chair and procedural chair and lead the April 2025 conference to be a memorable one.
Procedural Chair
HyunJeong Hwang
Grade 7
Honorable directors, fellow delegates, and most esteemed guests,
I am HyunJeong Hwang, a 7th grade student at the United Nations International School of Hanoi. This is my first conference as a chair and I am honored to be a procedural chair for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for the April 2025 conference. As this is my first experience as a chair, I am fully committed in not only presenting my best effort to form a successful debate but also to build enriching experiences to gain deeper understanding of the continuous global conflicts. I am confident that my enthusiasm and passion will support me to attain these aspirations. In the April 2025 conference, I hope there will be fruitful debates, quality resolutions, and active POIs happening.
The main theme for this MUN conference is, “How can we strengthen peaceful cooperation in the context of global innovation?” a crucial topic for nations to discuss amongst as several effective innovations in various fields have risen. Moreover, as these innovations are the key factors of deepening current international conflicts, this theme will be valuable to debate about, providing better understanding of how opportunities can be developed within the innovations.
The International Organization for Migration has a vital role in this theme since climate migration can cause consequential global conflicts, disturbing major aspects of the nations. In addition, climate migration may depend economically, socially, and financially. Meanwhile the International Organization for Migration takes responsibility for developing regulations. Therefore, the International Organization for Migration is essential in reinforcing the idea of peaceful cooperation in the context of global innovations.
Once again, as this is my first conference as a chair I will dedicate myself to a successful and perceptive debate that would contribute to the theme for this conference. I look forward to watching the process of delegates understanding the ongoing global conflicts in the conference as well. I hope to collaborate well with the head chair and the deputy chair of the International Organization for Migration. Lastly, I hope the April 2025 conference will be a valuable experience for all.
