The question of sanction regimes
Head Chair
Karin Kurashima
Grade 8
Honorable directors, fellow delegates, and most esteemed guests,
My name is Karin Kurashima, in 8th grade at the United Nations international school. I will be head chair for this year’s security council. This conference is my second time as chair, and I am honored to be chair taking part in the November 2025 conference.
As MUN plays a large role in my school life, making my understanding of global issues and enhancing my skills in solving issues and debate, I am eager to expand my involvement in UNISMUN.
The theme for the November conference will be: “The role of sovereignty in diplomacy towards international responsibility”. The idea of sovereignty has always been important in international relations, but in today’s world it can sometimes clash with the responsibility countries have to the global community. It is very important for nations to balance their own needs and decision-making with the need to work together to maintain peace and security. For the security council, this strongly connects with the committee’s purpose, since many of the debates focus on respecting sovereignty while also addressing issues.
The Security Council will be focusing on the question of sanction regimes. Sanctions are widely used and influence many nations, yet their impacts are often debated, some see them as necessary for accountability, while others view them as harmful to sovereignty. This topic will challenge delegates to consider both sides carefully and discuss how sanctions should be used in a fair and effective way. The theme of sovereignty and responsibility will be at the center, making it a meaningful debate for the security council. I hope in this conference, delegates will be able to explore this balance and have a productive, fruitful debate.
Deputy Chair
Suria Hong
Grade 7
Honorable Directors, fellow delegates, and most esteemed guests,
My name is Suria Hong, a 7th Grader at United Nations International School. I am honored to be Deputy Chair of the Security Council. This is my third MUN conference and my first time performing as a Chair. As this is my first conference as chair, I am committed to putting my best effort into leading a fruitful and engaging debate and hope to improve my MUN skills in solving global issues and public speaking as well as being able to support the delegates in my committee. This conference, I am looking forward to participating in the UNISMUN conference from the perspective of a chair.
The issue for the Security Council will be “The question of sanction regimes.” This is an essential question to be discussed as nations are developing and becoming more powerful. Sanction regimes are more necessary now than ever to settle conflicts and prevent them from escalating between nations and even blocs. It is urgent to discuss the sanctions regimes as only the Security Council is able to impose them. The sanctions are mandatory as they are alternatives to war and are tools to maintain peace and security.
Once again, this is my first year as chair, and I will put in my best effort in helping all delegates give speeches, answer POIs, and write resolutions. From my past experiences as a delegate for the previous 2 conferences, I understand how tough and difficult it can be to speak up and give speeches. I will try to use my experience to help delegates engage and create an insightful debate. I hope everyone creates new memories and has a good experience at the 2025 November UNISMUN conference.
