The question of disarmament of nuclear weapons
Head Chair
HyunJeong Hwang
Grade 8
Honorable directors, fellow delegates, and most esteemed guests,
I am HyunJeong Hwang, an 8th grade student attending the United Nations International School of Hanoi. The April 2026 conference will be my third conference as a chair and I am honored to serve as the head chair of the Security Council. As this is my third time being a chair, I hope to grow continuously through not only committing my best effort but also gaining deeper understanding about the global conflicts. Standing in the role of the head chair for this conference, I aim to support my co-chairs throughout their experiences, guiding them towards their own growth. I am confident that my desire toward growth will support me to attain these aspirations and inspire others.
The main theme for this MUN conference is, “To what extent can international agreements effectively protect us against global threats”. This is a crucial topic for nations to discuss as the world continues to shift with newly surfacing issues. Complying with the change of the world, conflicts emerge internationally in various fields: social, economic, political, and climate. The external factors derived from these conflicts have been substantially influencing the individuals by causing threat. To protect the suffering individuals with their distinctive struggles stemming from the broader barriers, nations together have been establishing international agreements to actively tackle it from the past. However, despite the effective solutions in the nation's response, as the political landscape shifts, following the trend of how the traditional paradigms are struggling to resolve emerging modern conflicts, there tends to be areas lacking shelter towards the vulnerable individuals needing modifications. Overall, this theme will provide insights about how we can construct protection for individuals who were excluded from the boundaries of the traditional paradigms and enable broader perspectives on the need of consideration on the world’s transitions.
The Security Council has a vital role in this conference not only due to its prominent position in the UN but also due to its correlation with the conference’s theme. Firstly, the Security Council is officially also known as the principal organ of the UN, being responsible for international maintenance in peace and security. Contrasting to other bodies in the UN, the Security Council holds the command to legally binding resolutions which the whole UN member states are anticipated to follow, showing accountability. The Security Council lies in this conference as it embodies both the conference theme and its own theme. As the security council is in control of peace and security, it connects to the theme of the protection of international agreements as peace among the nations and security within each country is the key to build and go against global threats. For this conference the security council debates upon “ The question of disarmament of nuclear weapons.”. As nuclear weapons from the past have been an ongoing controversy device between the global politics due to its ripple effect, it will be a great opportunity for the delegates to refer back to how nuclear weapons pose a potential global threat with the necessity of international agreements.
Once again, as this is my third conference being a chair, I will dedicate myself to a meaningful debate that contributes to not only my personal growth but to others’ growth as well. I look forward to watching the process of delegates gaining a profound understanding on the ongoing global conflict and the process of learning what different acts they can pose to resolve it together. Lastly I hope to effectively collaborate with my co-chairs and wish that the April 2026 conference will be a valuable experience for all.
Deputy Chair
Suria Hong
Grade 7
Honorable Directors, fellow delegates, and most esteemed guests,
My name is Suria Hong, a 7th Grader at United Nations International School. I am honored to be Deputy Chair of the Security Council. This is my fourth MUN conference and my second time performing as a Chair. At this conference, I am committed to putting my best effort into leading a fruitful and engaging debate and hope to improve my MUN skills in solving global issues and public speaking as well as being able to support the delegates in my committee. This conference, I am looking forward to participating in the UNISMUN conference from the perspective of a chair.
This conference’s theme will be “To what extent can international agreements effectively protect us against global threats”. This is crucial as the world is adapting with new and arising issues. Global threats are becoming greater and more critical where international agreements and collaboration between nations is necessary for the future.
The issue for the Security Council will be “ The question of disarmament of nuclear weapons.” This is an essential question to be discussed as nations are developing and becoming more powerful. Nations are actively developing nuclear weapons and expanding stockpiles. Disarmament of nuclear weapons is driven by the UN goal to prevent catastrophic destruction. The Security Council’s goal and responsibility is for international peace and security. This question connects to the theme as nuclear weapons have imposed great controversies with the harms of; environmental impact, violation of law, waste of resources, and the impact on humans and animals. As nuclear weapons can create extreme destruction, this conference provides a new opportunity for delegates to determine the international peace and security the Security Council sets for.
With all that said, I will put in my best effort in helping all delegates give speeches, answer POIs, and write resolutions. From my past experiences as a previous delegate, I understand how tough and difficult it can be to speak up and give speeches. I will try to use my experience to help delegates engage and create an insightful debate. I hope everyone will create fun memories, make new friends, and have a good experience at the 2026 April UNISMUN conference.
