Honorable chairs, distinguished delegates, and esteemed guests
My name is Le Phu Duc, a junior at Alpha Schools. The UNISMUN November 2026 conference marks my 5th MUN conference and my first as a Chair. I am deeply honoured to serve as the Head Chair for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization at the forthcoming N2026 UNISMUN conference. I'm looking forward to the committee’s fruitful debate on the agenda at the upcoming conference.
The theme of this November conference, “To what extent can multilateralism remain effective in an increasingly divided world?”, addresses NATO’s core values and principles, which are based on multilateral cooperation among member states. The world is observing the rise of geopolitical friction and unilateralism, as well as common issues regarding international security and national autonomy. NATO, with its unity and coherence, has proven that multilateralism is far from losing its relevance against common security and sustainability threats, but is becoming increasingly important.
Regarding the first topic, “The question of safeguarding territorial integrity of member states” is becoming increasingly vital with NATO’s common security and sovereignty challenges from within and outside the organization. Threats such as hybrid warfare or internal territorial disputes not only undermine the autonomy of member states but also impair the alliance’s integration overall. Delegates should pursue both legal and practical solutions toward a united NATO that could defend against threats with its internal resources.
On the second topic, “The question of NATO membership expansion” it has been a debate within the organization in the context of defense spending pressure, as well as the self-reliance issue, which is rising over time. While expanding membership for NATO can improve its regional coverage and security, it raises questions about whether new members reach the economic quotas set by the organization and whether NATO’s economic structure supports them. Delegates should consider the balance between NATO’s membership standards and the current overall geopolitical landscape
I encourage delegates to thoroughly research NATO's scope and authority within its member states as well as its role within the region in international security. I hope to see all of you at NATO in the UNISMUN N2026 conference!!
Best regards,
Le Phu Duc

My name is Jay Lee, and I am a sophomore at the United Nations International School of Hanoi. This is my fourth year in UNISMUN, attending 7 conferences in total. This is my 3rd conference as a chair, and I am highly honored to be serving as your deputy chair for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for the upcoming N2026 UNISMUN conference. I am excited to be able to support my delegates throughout this conference and make sure that our committee room is full of fruitful and enjoyable debates.
This upcoming conference theme, “To what extent can multilateralism remain effective in an increasingly divided world?”, is relevant to current situations around the world. This theme questions how well international organizations can solve major issues amid the current division of power. This is also relevant to the NATO committee specifically, since the alliance must maintain its collective defense across member states even with the ongoing internal political conflicts and external pressures.
The 2 topics of NATO highly connect back to the theme. The topics “The question of safeguarding territorial integrity of member states” and “The question of NATO membership extension” are deeply connected with the question of our ability to remain a collective power with the current challenges that we are facing.
The first topic, “The question of safeguarding territorial integrity of member states,” emphasizes the need for a collective and united defense strategy. NATO promises all its member states political and military defense. When member states’ borders are threatened, it invokes Article 4, with the alliance coming together immediately to plan an appropriate defensive response. If an actual invasion occurs, this triggers Article 5, with countries treating the attack as an attack on all member states to restore the borders. This question mainly focuses on a strategically balanced defensive response of deterrence and escalation. Delegates are strongly encouraged to review NATO Article 4 and Article 5 and additional documents on the current strategic concept of NATO.
The second topic, “The questions of NATO membership extension”, emphasizes the importance of NATO’s guidelines on new members for the alliance’s security as a whole. Under Article 10 of the NATO, European democracies may join the alliance to contribute to the security of the region. There is ongoing debate about these regulations due to opposing beliefs about them. Some believe that new countries joining improves the overall security and maintains the peace in the region while others believe it may be seen as a threat to adversaries dragging the alliance into war and conflicts. This topic will mainly focus on a way to allow new countries to join the alliance while maintaining overall security in the region. Delegates are strongly encouraged to look through NATO Article 10 and other membership guidelines of NATO.
I hope that throughout this conference, not only will I be able to grow as a chair, but also provide necessary support and guidance for all delegates. I hope I can work together with my peer chairs to help craft fruitful debates making everyone’s MUN experiences the most enjoyable as possible. I hope to see you soon at the conference.
Best regards,
Jay Lee

Honorable chairs, distinguished delegates, and most esteemed guests,
My name is Diep Nguyen Luong, and I’m currently a sophomore at United Nations International School. This conference marks my second year in UNISMUN, and the N2026 conference is my fourth overall. I’m very excited to be serving as a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) chair for my first-ever chairing experience, and I hope I’ll be leaving behind many structured, highly academic, and fair debates, while providing a comfortable and encouraging platform for all delegates to voice their opinions.
This UNISMUN November 2026 conference theme, “To what extent can multilateralism remain effective in an increasingly divided world?” connects back to NATO’s principles of collective defense, political solidarity, and institutional consensus. As geopolitical rifts fracture the international order, we must critically re-examine our multilateral frameworks' capacity to deliver collective security. NATO’s history proves that domestic political friction doesn’t have to break collective defense. Looking at how member states routinely clash over budgets or domestic policies, yet still fall into line when shared security is threatened. It is a messy but realistic example of how sovereign nations actually compromise when they have no other choice.
Our two topics: “The question of safeguarding the territorial integrity of member states” and “The question of NATO membership extension” delve into the core challenges of modern defense and diplomacy. These topics examine the modern challenges to state sovereignty, focusing specifically on how unconventional methods like cyberattacks and gray-zone operations threaten stability. We must determine the exact mechanisms NATO can use to support its frontline members while ensuring these defensive actions don’t trigger further escalations.
Overall, as your chair for this N2026 Conference, I encourage delegates to research deeply, understand your nation’s policy red lines, and consistently engage in constructive diplomacy. Chairs will always be available to support you guys throughout the whole conference, and I look forward to seeing you guys in November!
Sincerely,
Diep Nguyen Luong
